The Old Stone House & The Battle of Brooklyn New York Landmarks Conservancy

Hopefully, the report will make demolition efforts more difficult, although the home’s future remains uncertain. Regeneration in Place is the Old Stone House & Washington Park (OSH)’s newest contemporary art programming, featuring the artist collectives Environmental Performance Agency (EPA) and Gowanus Swim Society (GSS). Originally scheduled for Spring 2020, the format for the exhibition has shifted in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and the consequent mandated social distancing. We are pleased to announce the launch of the participatory online project by the EPA, as well as a series of digital programs with GSS. Our exhibition component Nature Contained with Gowanus Swim Society will be postponed to 2021. The Golden State’s oldest standing and functioning mission, Mission Basilica San Diego de Alcalá was built in 1769 by Junipero Serra.

Contemporary Art

The Old Stone House sits on the site of the original Washington Park, and across Fourth Avenue from the second Washington Park, two of the oldest professional baseball stadiums in New York. The left-center field wall from the second Washington Park is still visible on Third Avenue between First and Third Streets. The annual event presents a great opportunity for comedians, and also a veritable minefield.

For neighborhood families, we run after-school, winter break and summer programs. Each year, 7,000 students visit the Old Stone House to learn about the Battle of Brooklyn and colonial life. Our programs blend primary source documents, hands-on activities and inquiry-based learning to create an enriching experience for New York’s school children. After the Litchfield purchase The Old Stone House remained standing another forty years and was occupied by a caretaker during that period. It also served as a club house for a winter skating team,[7] and then for the professional baseball team called the Brooklyn Superbas, which would later be known as the Brooklyn Dodgers before their move to Ebbets Field.

Eight home interiors where mezzanines maximise usable space

If you're in Los Angeles, and you look up at the Hollywood sign up in the mountains, then look to the right about 2 miles, that's Griffith Park. In close-up, the open space in the lower half looks like it has horse trails on it, so that's maybe where the band members rode to in this next shot. Not so long ago, five cents went a lot further than it does now. Still, the Nickel Diner manages to recall the good ol' days when lunch counters and soda fountains were go-to destinations for hungry Angelenos. The Nickel Diner features breakfast, lunch and dinner, but the fun, nostalgic ambience and tasty breakfast menu helps kick off the day, even if all you're getting is a maple bacon donut.

In addition to its vast selection of titles across all genres, the store itself is a must-see for its interior design alone. Not only are there books for sale, but printed material is adapted to create a unique environment where novels, anthologies, manuals and storybooks actually become a part of the store's own layout, too. Don’t miss the mezzanine level, which includes the Labyrinth Above the Last Bookstore (the back room sells 100,000 books for $1 each!), Gather Yarn Shop, and the Spring Arts Collective gallery shops.

Colonial Brooklyn

In high contrast to the surrounding neighborhood, OSH and its grounds harken back to an older Brooklyn where people subsisted, at least in part, on food they could grow and forage themselves. During this time of social distancing, the public can experience in-progress images of the new work online, and virtual workshops with the artists. Today, the Old Stone House Historic Interpretive Center is operated by the Old Stone House of Brooklyn (OSH), a not-for-profit corporation, under license from the Parks Department. Ballwin, MissouriThis home, built between 1850 and 1860, sits atop land that was once part of a Spanish land claim. A two-story wood-framed addition was added to the original three-story stone structure, creating one of the area’s first true “split-level” homes. Lore says that the home served as a stop on the Underground Railroad and that Civil War soldiers were held prisoner in the property’s stone caves.

Tours of the VDL House are conducted on Saturdays by architecture students from Cal Poly Pomona. The home now offers approximately 2,300 square feet of living space, including four bedrooms and two full bathrooms. The main floor holds the living area, den/study, dining room, and kitchen, as well as a spacious bedroom and vintage-style bath.

A single-storey extension has been added to the southwest corner of Old Chapel to enlarge the ground-floor space for a generous family bathroom and small study. At the centre of the main living space, a woodburning stove denotes the distinction between the lounging and dining zones. "White plasterboard covered the walls and ceiling, and carpeted floors smothered the first-floor nave, with crude interventions from the '90s haphazardly altering the building use into a compromised family home," it explained. This involved stripping back walls, reorganising the ground-floor bedrooms and creating a "grand main hall" on the first floor with an open-plan living, dining and kitchen area, Tuckey Design Studio said. London practice Tuckey Design Studio has revamped a house in a converted chapel in Devon, England, revealing and restoring the building's original features. The answer is Santa Clara University, which was built in 1851.

After the war’s end, the Cortelyou family owned the house from 1790 to 1850. In the following years, the land surrounding the old Vechte-Cortelyou farmhouse was filled to provide level building lots for fashionable row houses. The Old Stone House & Washington Park is dedicated to preserving and teaching local and national history as it has impacted our historically significant Brooklyn neighborhood.

If you’d like to visit, or become part of the Old Stone House and its partners, feel free to visit their supporting page. Like many of their neighbors, the Vechtes enslaved generations of people of African descent. These enslaved people did most of the work on the Vechte farm. They raisied grains, fruits, vegetables, oysters, and cattle for sale. They did most of the cooking and cleaning and kept the hearth fires going through long cold nights. When the Continental Congress declared independence from Great Britain in 1776, more enslaved people lived at the Old Stone House than free.

The John Shopp Farm, located along route 581 in Camp Hill, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, dates back to the late 1700s. After passing through several members in the Shopp family, the property was acquired by the Bohn family. European settlers began purchasing land near the Gowanus from the leaders of Marechkawick and other Lenape towns in 1636.

Otis College Events

Take with you the persistence, courage, and curiosity you have developed throughout your education and use it to create the bright future I know that you have in front of you. Like many colleges and universities across the nation, KCAD made the difficult decision to transition our Commencement-related activities and events this spring to a virtual format to protect the health and safety of our campus community and guests in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Developed to foster creative opportunities for young people within the creative hub of Los Angeles, any senior-level student from Los Angeles County who plans to enroll at Otis College is eligible for this $40,000 scholarship award. “They all have very strong hardships in their life and they struggle,” says Tobias. Conquer design for space, motion, print and interaction by infusing words and images with life and meaning.

Master of Arts in Design

ArtCenter has taught me that creative inspiration arises from a process of perpetual observation, critical inquiry and fearless experimentation. If you're looking to pursue a creative path but not sure where to start, you’re in the right place. Design and develop vehicles (including cars, trucks, motorcycles, boats and aircraft) and transportation systems of the future. Design resonant spaces and spatial experiences that impact and inform the user's relationship to the built environment. Apply human-centered design to creating innovative consumer products, from the highly functional to the highly whimsical to the highly sustainable. Master the art of creating resonant photographic images for a world with an insatiable need to be informed and engaged by visual storytelling.

Established in 1918, Otis College of Art and Design prepares students in the art and design capital of Los Angeles for a dynamic future in the creative economy. The College educates a diverse community of over 1,200 students in a supportive setting to become highly skilled professionals in established and emerging creative sectors. Alumni and faculty are Fulbright, MacArthur, and Guggenheim grant recipients, Oscar winners, legendary costume designers, leaders of contemporary art movements, entrepreneurs, and design stars at influential companies including Apple, Pixar, DreamWorks, Mattel, Nike, and Netflix. This richness and variety are at the heart of the ArtCenter experience, where the course of study has been reimagined to address the opportunities and demands of the contemporary world. An ArtCenter education inspires and prepares artists and designers to be the creative leaders of the future. The experience gained here will prove invaluable as our graduates pursue their personal and professional goals.

The Creative Futures Prize

Bring stories to life for the entertainment industry through the design of novel characters and worlds. It's graduation season, and students at Kendall College of Art and Design of Ferris State University will be showing off their final projects at the annual Student Exhibition. Get to know some of our remarkable students as they work toward turning their passions into their professions. Tobias realized they would need professional models to help elevate the showcase. “They’re really getting out and connecting with their individual communities and saying, ‘Come to Dallas College, see what I’m working on, see me shine.’ And it’s a really proud moment for the students and their families,” says Silkey-Jones, the vice provost.

It is not just a collection of images, objects, essays, and theses; it is the hard-earned proof that they have persevered through what is perhaps the greatest challenge of our time. KCAD is an extraordinary college, not because of what we say, but because of what you do. This year also marks the 20th anniversary of the merger between KCAD and Ferris State University. As a campus community, we take pride in the elements of KCAD that make our learning community unique and value the opportunities that are a direct result of the college's partnership with Ferris. We emphasize small class sizes and one-on-one interaction, which means our expert faculty are more than teachers—they’re mentors who invest in your success. Beyond the classroom, a KCAD education connects you and your creativity to something bigger than yourself through industry interactions, real-world projects, and community engagement.

While most of Design Week’s events will be held on Dallas College campuses and free to the public, the Future of Fashion Design Showcase will be a ticketed event hosted at On the Levee in the Design District. Emmanuel Tobias, the Dallas College faculty member who oversees the show, has helped in its evolution since he joined the school five years ago. “The biggest thing, and what Dallas College does overall, is provide opportunity for people.

The county now has plans to restore the structure as part of a larger park improvement; adaptive reuse is being considered. In the mid-20th century, at one time, it was the site of a used-car dealership. After acquisition and renovation by the National Park Service (NPS) in the 1950s, the Old Stone House was adapted as a house museum. The Old Stone House stands among the neighborhood's stores and restaurants. The building is considered part of the Rock Creek Parkway urban natural area and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973.

From the Center

John inherited the land from his father and most likely built the stone structure himself. The home became a center of United Brethernism in the area until a church was built in 1827. The property was passed down through several members of the Shopp family, some of the earliest settlers of Cumberland County. The property then passed through the hands of a few development/mortgage companies and landed, finally, in the possession of the Bohn family, which owns it today. In the past this has included a late 19th Century baseball team, lessons on impressionism and the open air painting movement, and historical craft breweries.

When Dutch West India Company Director Wilhelm Kieft ordered attacks on unarmed Indigenous visitors at Pavonia and Corlears Hook in February 1643, Marechkawick and other Lenape forced the Europeans back onto Manhattan. Two and half years later, in August 1645, European troops retook the area. With “Kieft’s War” over, these settlers founded Breukelen in March 1646 on top of Marechkawick. In TRANSITion (2013) brought together 19 artists and arts groups responding to differing visions of ideal urban transportation systems or proposing their own.

Recently listed in Los Angeles, California, this craftsman-style home lives up to the archetype. The landmarked property—originally built in 1892 for a professor who taught at Occidental College—comes with a facade made of riverbed stone and an interior filled with original woodwork. Both the structure and a streetside retaining wall were designated Cultural Monument #373 by the City of Los Angeles in 1988. This circa-1800 stone inn, located in the historic village of Perkiomenville, Pennsylvania, has been stripped down to its original plaster and stone and pine floors.

On August 30, 1776, Maryland Major Mordecai Gist wrote, “The principal loss sustained in our battalion fell on Captains Veazey, Adams, Lucas, Ford, and Bowie’s companies. The killed, wounded, and missing amount to two hundred and fifty-nine.”  Where those killed are buried is uncertain to this day. The fighting raged in and through areas that Brooklynites travel every day. Significant battlefields included Gravesend Bay, and today’s Green-Wood Cemetery, Prospect Park, Fort Greene Park and Fulton Ferry Landing. When people remember the beginning of the American Revolution, they usually think of the “shot heard ‘round the world,” fired in 1775 in Concord, Massachusetts, or the bloody battle at Bunker Hill.

Today it is the center of a vibrant, diverse community of engaged citizens. In the heart of Olvera Street sits the Ávila Adobe, one of the oldest homes in California. Constructed in 1818 by Francisco Ávila, the house is now a treasured California Historic Landmark and an iconic architectural site in the City of Angels. Ávila and his family lived in the house until 1868 before being overtaken by a U.S. Over the following years, the mansion was used as a hotel, lodging, and a temporary home to the U.S. troops.

Notice the door frame to the stone cabin; the charred wood frame looks like its been through a fire. And here's the back cover, also taken with the stone house in the background. As the oldest operating institution of higher learning in the Golden State, the University’s campus surrounds the historic Mission Santa Clara de Asis and mimics its architectural style. According to history, the bishop of Monterey Joseph Sadoc Alemany gave the area surrounding the mission to Italian Jesuits John Nobili and Michael Accolti. The bishop’s only condition was that they build a college for California's growing Catholic population.

We are also the conservancy organization for JJ Byrne Playground and Washington Park – caring for our neighborhood park, playground and gardens to create a vibrant public space. Litchfield was the major landowner of the farmland in the area at that time and sold much of his land to the city for the creation of Prospect Park. The current structure is a 1933 reconstruction, using some original materials, of the Vechte–Cortelyou House, which was destroyed in 1897. The original house was an important part of the 1776 Battle of Long Island during the American Revolutionary War.

This will help determine if you have any fungus gnat activity in the soil. For fruit flies, the easiest DIY option is a vinegar trap, which is simple and cost-effective to create. Simply place a few tablespoons of apple cider vinegar or white vinegar, a few drops of dish soap, and a tablespoon of sugar in a bowl and stir.

For best results, also scrub infested drain pipes with a wire brush and enzymatic cleanser. If the gnats are infesting your houseplants, you can either purchase a mild insecticidal spray or make one yourself. Fill an empty spray bottle with lukewarm water and mix in a few drops of mild dish soap. Spritz this lightly on gnat-infested plants, but be sure to come back two to three hours later to thoroughly rinse the leaves. Note that commercially-available sprays designed for houseplants are less likely to damage the plants than homemade sprays, even with mild dish soap.

To use Bti against gnats, it’s important to use the right bacteria strain. You can create an organic, natural neem oil soil drench to eradicate soil bugs. Before drenching your soil with the bug-destroying liquid, wait until the top part of the soil is dry. After the pupal stage that lasts for three to four days, the tiny adult gnats emerge from the soil. If things get really bad, you may find yourself in need of a more serious bug killer. Insecticide is one option, though we caution against using it if you have small children around (and as always, you'll want to be sure you're following manufacturer directions).

For gardeners, though, a gnat infestation can spell devastation. While adult gnats don’t damage plants, the larvae will eat roots and leaves. There are many pesticides on the market, but some plants are sensitive to the chemicals in them.
